How to choose a hiking down jacket6 ranked by fill power × down weight

Home › Rankings › How to choose a hiking down jacket

Choose a hiking down jacket by multiplying fill power by down weight. #1 is the NANGA Aurora Tex Light Mikami with 180 g of 860FP down, for a calculated loft of about 84.6 L. #2 is the Mountain Base, which puts synthetic fill where a pack's shoulder straps tend to crush the down.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

Fill power isn't how warm a jacket is. It's the quality of a pinch of down. 760FP means 30 g of down lofts to 760 cubic inches. At the same 760FP, 100 g and 150 g differ in loft by 1.5×. So whenever I see an FP number, I look for the down weight and compare the two multiplied.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • At the same 760FP, the Mountain Lodge with 100 g of down is about 41.5 L, and the Mountain Base with 150 g is about 62.3 L. A 1.5× difference in loft
  • Price per liter ranges from about ¥795 for the Aurora Tex Down Jacket to about ¥1,236 for the Mikami
  • Mammut released its 2026 fall/winter Dry Down collection on October 14. It publishes no down weight, so it isn't ranked

Same 760FP, 1.5× the loft

NANGA's Mountain Lodge Down Jacket and Mountain Base Down Jacket both use 760FP down. The official spec tables list 100 g and 150 g of down.

By fill power alone they look the same, but one holds 1.5× the down. For hiking down jackets, multiply the two before comparing.

How I chose

The first thing I checked was whether the official page lists the down weight (how many grams of down are inside). Without it, you can't compare how warm a jacket is, however high the FP. Among what you can buy on Rakuten, NANGA was the brand that officially published down weight, so this ranking covers 6 NANGA jackets.

I ranked them mainly by the loft calculated from FP and down weight, then separated close ones by how they handle a pack and whether the shell is waterproof. I hike in Japan and abroad, and down is something you wear when you stop, more than when you walk.

3 things to check in a hiking down jacket

  • Fill power: the quality of the down. NANGA's explainer page lists 4 grades from 760 to 930FP
  • Down weight: how many grams are inside. Multiply by FP to get the loft
  • Shell fabric: a waterproof-breathable shell if it will see rain or snow; a thin shell if it's a warm layer that lives in your pack

As shown on NANGA's official pages on October 14, 2026 (all men's, incl. tax). Loft is my own calculation, based on NANGA's explanation (30 g of down lofts to as many cubic inches as its FP): FP ÷ 30 × down weight × 16.387 ÷ 1000. It's a rough figure for comparison.

What is fill power? How much FP for hiking?

760FP means that 30 g of down, under a set pressure, rebounds to 760 cubic inches (NANGA's definition). So FP is the quality of the down; how many grams a jacket holds is a separate matter.

Rather than drawing a line at some FP for hiking, I compare FP × down weight. The Mazeno Ridge (770FP, 100 g) lofts just 0.6 L more than the Mountain Lodge (760FP, 100 g). That's about what a 10-point FP gap is worth at the same weight.

Working out the price per liter

I calculated price per liter of loft as price ÷ loft. The Aurora Tex Down Jacket is about ¥795, the lowest of the 6; the Mikami is about ¥1,236 and the Mazeno Ridge about ¥1,229.

The Mikami costs more because of its 860FP goose down and a shell with 24,116 g/㎡/24h breathability. If you just want loft for less, go #3; if you'll wear it in rain or snow, go #1.

Why this order

RankModelWhy it's ranked here
#1MikamiAbout 84.6 L, the most loft of the 6, with a waterproof-breathable shell.
#2Mountain BaseSynthetic fill on the shoulders and back, so pack weight doesn't crush the down as easily.
#3Aurora TexSame ~62.3 L as #2 at about ¥795 per liter, but not built around wearing a pack.
#4Light ForceAbout 74.7 L, the second most, but waterproof-breathable only on the hood and shoulders.
#5Mazeno RidgeWater-repellent down, but a smallish loft of about 42.1 L.
#6Mountain Lodge HoodiePacks into its own pocket, but loft is about 47.7 L.

#1 NANGA Aurora Tex Light Mikami | 180 g of 860FP

180 g of 860FP Polish goose down. Calculated loft is about 84.6 L, about 1.36× that of #2. The shell has a 20,394 mm waterproof rating and 24,116 g/㎡/24h breathability, so you can wear it in rain or snow.

The weak spot is the price: over ¥100,000. It's the jacket for someone who spends long stretches stopped and waiting on a winter ridge.

#2 NANGA Mountain Base | built not to crush under a pack

Built for wearing under a pack, with synthetic fill on the shoulders and the center of the back. Down loses loft when crushed, so if you'll wear it with a pack on, this design makes sense.

The trade-off is that the shoulders and back aren't counted in the down weight. It suits people who wear it a lot while walking.

#3 NANGA Aurora Tex Down Jacket | about ¥795 per liter

Loft is about 62.3 L, the same as #2, and it's ¥5,500 cheaper. The shell is waterproof-breathable with a 20,000 mm waterproof rating, and its price per liter is the lowest of the 6 jackets.

Breathability is 6,000 g/㎡/24h, about a quarter of the Mikami's. It suits people who spend more time stopped than sweating on the move.

#4 NANGA Light Force | about 74.7 L from 180 g

180 g of 760FP down, the second-largest loft of the 6. The shell is CORDURA nylon, with waterproof-breathable Aurora Tex on the hood and shoulders.

The weak spot: the front and arms aren't waterproof-breathable. It suits people who want plenty of down under an abrasion-resistant shell.

#5 NANGA Mazeno Ridge Jacket | water-repellent 770FP down

It uses UDD DX, down that is itself water-repellent, which NANGA says sheds moisture and water and holds its warmth even when wet. The shell is 20D recycled nylon.

Down weight is 100 g, for a loft of about 42.1 L. It suits people who spend a lot of time in sweat or damp air.

#6 NANGA Mountain Lodge Down Hoodie | packs into a pocket

Both shell and lining are 10dn recycled nylon, and the jacket packs into its inside pocket. It has a hood, and 115 g of down, 15 g more than the hoodless version.

Loft is about 47.7 L, small for a winter outer layer. It suits people looking for something to throw on during breaks in spring or fall.

Mammut's 2026 fall/winter down went on sale October 14

Mammut has been selling its 2026 fall/winter Dry Down collection, 25 styles including new models, across Japan since October 14. In the press release, the Broad Peak Light IN Hooded Jacket is 800FP at ¥48,400, and the Eiger Nordwand Light Down is 900FP at ¥88,000.

No down weight is published, so I couldn't measure them against the 6 by loft and left them out of the ranking. The new Broad Peak has a thin 10D shell and packs into its side pocket, which makes it strong for taking on and off as you walk. I judged who it suits in my Mammut Broad Peak Light IN review. The step-up model, with a helmet-compatible hood and synthetic fill placed where it's needed, is covered in my Eiger Nordwand Light Down review.

Who is it for?

It's for people who choose by how cold they get when they stop: a break on the summit, waiting outside a hut, evenings at the tent site. Because it's gear you spend so much time not wearing, the big-loft #1 and #4 earn their keep the moment you put them on. To throw one on with your pack still on, go #2; for loft on a budget, go #3.

When walking in rain, you can also layer rainwear over the down. I compared rain gear in my hiking rain jacket rankings.

If your current down is enough for the season of the mountains you go to, you don't need another. For low summer mountains only, fleece or synthetic insulation is another way to go.

What you wear under the down also changes how much loft you need. I compared next-to-skin layers in how to choose a hiking base layer.

FAQ

What fill power do I need for a hiking down jacket?

FP alone doesn't decide it. Even NANGA's official pages draw no line for how much FP counts as hiking-grade, so I compare FP × down weight.

How many grams of down do I need?

It depends on the season and the mountain. These 6 jackets range from 100 to 180 g, for a loft of about 42.1 to 84.6 L.

What is water-repellent down?

Down whose feathers are themselves treated to repel water. NANGA says its UDD DX down lets moisture pass but doesn't absorb water.
