The Typhon 50000 Stretch Jacket is worth buying if you're willing to pay for the knit lining and stretch. But Millet's official lineup also has the 'Typhon Stretch Jacket,' with the waterproof rating raised to 30,000mm, just ¥1,100 apart. Unless the gap is wider than that, I'd pick the newer one.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
Breathability numbers change for the same fabric if you change the desiccant and setup. JIS L 1099 has method A-1 and method B-1, and testing labs explain that B-1 gives larger numbers. That's why I don't line up this 50,000, which has no test method attached, against other brands' numbers, and only use it for comparisons within Millet.
Key points
- ¥115.8 per gram. Pricier than mont-bell's Storm Cruiser Jacket (¥86.6) and cheaper than The North Face's Climb Light Jacket (¥177.5)
- Paired with the matching Typhon Trek Pants (214g, ¥24,200), the set comes to 518g, ¥59,400
- Ventilation works by opening the zip pockets, which are mesh on the inside
The Typhon 50000's breathability has no test method attached
Millet's official page lists breathability as 50,000g/m2/24h. It's the number in the product name, too. But no test method such as A-1 or B-1 is attached to it. The Typhon feature page is the same.
How I judged it
The first thing I checked was whether the breathability figure came with a test method. It didn't, so I didn't line it up against other brands and instead compared by reworking weight and price.
What gave me pause is that the gap to the 'Typhon Stretch Jacket,' with its waterproof rating raised to 30,000mm, is only 4g and ¥1,100. I still recommend it because it fits a 3-layer build with a knit lining into 304g. It suits people who also throw it on as a windbreaker, not just on rainy days.

There's more than one way to measure breathability
Breathability is the weight of water vapor that 1 m² of fabric lets through in 24 hours, and JIS L 1099 has two tests with different setups: method A-1 and method B-1. The testing lab Nissenken writes that 'method B-1 gives larger values than method A-1.'
Millet doesn't state the method. So I only use the 50,000 for comparisons within Millet.
The heart of the Typhon 50000: 3 layers and a knit lining
I'll be enthusiastic here. This jacket's value lies more in its knit lining than in the 50,000 figure. The lining claims a silk-like feel against the skin. Since the membrane doesn't touch your skin directly, it's built to resist clinging to your arms when you throw it over a short-sleeve shirt in summer rain.
Ventilation works by opening the zip pockets, which are mesh on the inside. This part is so-so. While they're open, you can't keep things in the pockets.
How it compares with the Typhon Stretch, Phantom, and 2 jackets from other brands

| Model | Weight | Waterproof rating | Official price | Per gram |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typhon 50000 Stretch | 304g | 20,000mm | ¥35,200 | ¥115.8 |
| Typhon Stretch | 300g | 30,000mm | ¥36,300 | — |

| mont-bell Storm Cruiser | 254g (average) | 20,000mm or more | ¥22,000 | ¥86.6 |
The gap to the Typhon Stretch Jacket: 4g and ¥1,100
The breathability figure, knit lining, and finished measurements across 5 sizes are the same; only the waterproof rating is 1.5 times higher, and it adds a helmet-compatible hood and water-resistant zippers. With a ¥1,100 gap, I'd pick the newer one. Choose the 50000 when you want a color only it comes in, or when the price gap is wider.

It costs ¥7,700 more, about ¥54.6 for each gram saved. The knit lining comes on the 50000 and the Stretch. Lightness or lining: that's the deciding point.

50g heavier and ¥13,200 pricier than the Storm Cruiser. That ¥13,200 is what you pay for stretch and the knit lining. Versus The North Face's Climb Light (about 285g, ¥50,600), it's 19g heavier and ¥15,400 cheaper. If you need underarm vents and a helmet-compatible hood, the Climb Light's build suits you.

Things to watch
The official store says it doesn't accept exchanges because the size or color differs from what you imagined. Sizes are Euro sizing, and going up one size adds 2.5cm to the chest width, so lay a shell you already own flat and measure it before choosing. For care, follow the care label on the garment.
For a side-by-side ranking, see the rain jacket rankings; for a brushed-lined winter option, see the Typhon Warm review.
Who is it for?
It suits people who want one jacket with 3 layers and a knit lining to handle rainy hiking days.
If the water repellency has merely worn off, washing it to restore the DWR comes first. If price and lightness come first, the Storm Cruiser or the Phantom; if you're not fussy about color, the similarly priced Typhon Stretch is another way to go.
FAQ
Is the Typhon 50000's breathability less clammy than another brand's 40,000?
The numbers alone can't decide it. The reliable comparison is within a range where you can confirm the test method is the same, in other words, within the same maker.
What's the difference between the Typhon 50000 and the Typhon Stretch Jacket?
By the official numbers, three things differ: waterproof rating (20,000mm vs 30,000mm), weight, and price. The breathability figure and lining are the same.
How much does the Typhon 50000 weigh as a top-and-bottom set?
Jacket plus Trek Pants: 518g total, ¥59,400. Both have a 15-denier knit lining.
