The Mammut Broad Peak Light IN Hooded Jacket (2026 fall/winter, out Oct 14) is a buy if you want thin down to wear while moving on overnight trips. It uses 800cuin down for ¥48,400, with a 10D recycled nylon outer.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
With this down, look at how it packs and how its use is described before the quality of the feathers. The jacket stuffs into either side pocket, and the intended uses are overnight hiking, ski touring and alpine climbing. That's why I count it as a thin layer you put on and take off while walking, not a thick down for putting on during a stop.
Key points
- 800cuin, ¥48,400. 40 higher in fill power than the NANGA Mountain Lodge Down Hoodie (760FP), at the same ¥48,400
- The Eiger Nordwand Light Down above it (900cuin) costs ¥88,000, a difference of ¥39,600. That's 1.82x the price
- Outer and lining are 10D × 10D recycled nylon. It stuffs into either of its two side pockets
The Broad Peak Light comes out Oct 14. Thin down to wear while walking
Before buying a down jacket, decide first: will you put it on during stops, or wear it while you walk? The Broad Peak Light IN is the second kind.
It has a lightweight, micro-baffle build, an athletic fit, and a thin, low-bulk hood. The intended uses are overnight hiking, ski touring and alpine climbing. For a skin-layer piece to wear while moving, see the finetrack Drought Largo review.
How I judged it
The first thing I looked at was how its use is described: overnight hiking, ski touring and alpine climbing. Next I compared it against the NANGA Mountain Lodge Down Hoodie (760FP) at the same ¥48,400, and 800cuin came out 40 higher. What gave me pause was whether to recommend ¥48,400 to someone shopping for a thick down. Still, I recommend it, because the 10D outer, the pocket stowing and the four colors all match its use as thin gear for moving. It suits anyone looking for insulation to put on and take off while walking.

What is 800cuin Dry Down?
Mammut's DRY DOWN means 100% high-quality goose or duck down of at least 750 fill power, treated with a down water-repellent finish or a waterproof finish on the outer fabric.
So the 800cuin on this jacket is about feather quality. How much it lofts depends on how many grams of down go in. The trick to choosing down is not to compare warmth by FP alone.
How it differs from the Eiger Light and NANGA: what changes for ¥39,600?
| Model | FP | Outer fabric | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad Peak Light IN | 800cuin | 10D recycled nylon | ¥48,400 |
| Eiger Nordwand Light Down IN | 900cuin | 20D Pertex Quantum (Diamond Fuse) | ¥88,000 |
| NANGA Mountain Lodge Down Hoodie | 760FP | 10dn recycled nylon | ¥48,400 |
¥88,000 − ¥48,400 = ¥39,600. The price is 88,000 ÷ 48,400 = about 1.82x. FP is 100 higher; the numbers show that much.
The rest is construction. The Eiger Light puts synthetic insulation (G-LOFT ECO EVOX) in wet-prone areas and adds a helmet-compatible hood and harness-compatible pockets. It's a garment built as climbing gear; the Broad Peak is for people who don't need that much.

RecommendedSee it on RakutenSame ¥48,400 as the NANGA Mountain Lodge. What's different?
The Mountain Lodge Down Hoodie, which I placed 6th in the down rankings, is also ¥48,400. As the table shows, the Mammut has 40 more FP, and both outers are thin 10-denier nylon. NANGA lists a down weight of 115g, and multiplied by FP the loft comes to about 47.7L by my calculation.
For anyone who wants to compare loft by the numbers, NANGA has the fuller set of inputs. On the other hand, the thin 10D outer and the four colors are traits the Mountain Lodge doesn't list. I split it this way: NANGA if you decide by loft, Mammut if you decide by thinness and stowing. A fuller comparison is in the down jacket rankings.
Who it suits
It suits someone on a hut or tent trip who puts it on for the morning start or ridge wind and takes it off on the climb. It stows in a side pocket, so it pays off on days with many on-and-off changes. With 800cuin down wrapped in a thin 10D outer, it has the light feel of a new release this fall, and it's the pick for anyone who wants one insulating layer that takes no room in the pack.
The 10D outer is thin, so take some care on routes that rub against rock. For insulation you put on at a stop on a winter ridge, a thick down from the top of the rankings is another way to go.
If you want to look at another jacket
- If you want a thick down to wear the whole time you're pinned down in a tent, the thick ones at the top of the rankings are also candidates.
- If you want to compare by loft (FP × down weight), the NANGA Mountain Lodge, which lists its down weight, is easier to compare.
- For climbing with a helmet and harness, the build of the Eiger Light above suits you. Details are in the Eiger Nordwand Light Down review.
