The finetrack Ascent Beyond Hoodie is a new wind shell released on September 3, 2026, at ¥22,000 (incl. tax). For trips on rocky terrain and rocky ridges with a helmet and harness, it is the jacket I would recommend buying first.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

Its fabric is a thin 15-denier nylon layered with a membrane full of tiny pores. The pores let sweat vapor escape, the membrane stops wind and light rain, and the fabric stretches 132% sideways. So on rocky terrain where you raise your arms high, I choose by this stretch and membrane before lightness. The deciding factor is that it is 35g lighter and ¥11,000 cheaper than the Arc'teryx Squamish built for the same use.

Key points

  • About 115g in men's M at ¥22,000. Price per gram: 22,000 ÷ 115 = about ¥191
  • A membrane with a 700mm waterproof rating handles fog and passing showers. For steady rain, pair it with a rain jacket
  • Packs into the right inner hip pocket while you still wear a harness. The hood fits over a helmet

Is the Ascent Beyond Hoodie worth buying for hiking?

People say the lighter a wind shell, the better. But once you put on a harness on rocky terrain, other problems come before weight. The hem rides up when you raise your arms, there is nowhere to put the packed jacket, and the hood does not fit over your helmet.

The Ascent Beyond Hoodie solves all three through its design.

How I judged it

The first thing I looked at was the fabric stretch and the membrane. A fabric that stretches 132% sideways, with a 700mm waterproof membrane. Next, I lined it up with the Arc'teryx Squamish, also built for rocky terrain. What gave me pause was that it is 10g heavier and ¥5,500 more than the 105g Houdini. Even so, for people who use a harness and helmet, the hem, pocket and hood design are worth that difference.

I'll say this with feeling. Stretch fabric, a design that packs down to hang from a harness, and a helmet-compatible hood. The Ascent Beyond Hoodie has all three rocky-terrain features of the Squamish. On top of that, it is 150 − 115 = 35g lighter and 33,000 − 22,000 = ¥11,000 cheaper. If you are looking for a wind shell for rocky terrain, this is the one I would choose first.

Here is the catch. The fabric is 30 denier vs 15 denier, so the Squamish is twice as thick. If you often rub against rock, the thicker fabric gives more peace of mind.

If you don't walk on rocky terrain, you are better off choosing from the lightweight hiking wind shell rankings, which compare the other 4 jackets by weight. I compared helmets to wear under the hood in the lightweight hiking helmet rankings.

How far does a 700mm waterproof rating go in the rain?

The waterproof rating is how tall a column of water a fabric can hold before water seeps through (measured by JIS L 1092). Hiking rain jackets are mostly 15,000 to 28,000mm, so 700mm is about one-twentieth of that.

It is not fully waterproof. Think of it as something to get you through fog and passing showers, and carry rainwear separately.

Who it suits

It suits people who want one light windbreaker for trips on rocky terrain and rocky ridges with a helmet and harness. The fabric stretches 132% sideways so it doesn't pull when you raise your arms high, and the hem is built not to ride up. It packs into the hip pocket while you wear a harness, and the hood fits over a helmet. What's impressive about this new jacket is that it solves all three rocky-terrain problems within 115g.

It is 35g lighter and ¥11,000 cheaper than the Squamish, built for the same rocky terrain. If I were buying 1 wind shell for rocky terrain this fall, this is the one I would reach for first.

On days without rocky terrain, the lighter Houdini or Distance Wind Shell is another option. For steady rain, pair it with a rain jacket. For a layer you keep on all day in fall and winter mountains, I covered the same brand's Flow Wrap Hoodie review (285g, 10,000mm waterproof rating).
