The Suunto Core 2 is out Oct 22, 2026 (official) at ¥39,600 (incl. tax). It's the first successor in about 20 years to the 2007 original, cut down to the ABC trio of altimeter, barometer and compass, and it runs up to 15 months on a coin cell. If you want a mountain watch that never needs charging, it's a buy.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

This watch works out altitude from air pressure. When the weather turns and pressure drops, the altitude reading climbs even though you're standing in the same place. So I take the 15-month battery that needs no charging, on the understanding that I reset the height at trailheads and summit signs. The same sensor warns you of a sharp pressure drop with its storm alert.

Key points

  • A CR3032 coin cell lasts up to 15 months. That's 3 months longer than the original's 12, and you can replace it yourself
  • Water resistance goes from the original's 3 ATM to 10 ATM. The display is about 40% brighter, and you can pick red or green for the backlight
  • No GPS. It costs ¥32,200 less than the Garmin Instinct 3 Dual Power 45mm, which has GPS

Is the Suunto Core 2 worth buying for hiking? Choosing a watch you never charge

Day 3 of a traverse, and you stop recording because the GPS watch battery is on your mind. If that's happened to you, this watch's trade-off will land.

The Core 2 has no GPS. In exchange, it's an ABC watch that gives altitude, pressure and heading, and it runs up to 15 months on a coin cell. A watch you never think about charging in the mountains is quite rare these days.

How I judged it

The first thing I looked at was the battery: not rechargeable, but a CR3032 you replace yourself, good for up to 15 months. Then I lined it up against the 2007 original Core and the GPS-equipped Garmin Instinct 3 Dual Power 45mm. What gave me pause: at 74g, it's 10g heavier than the original and 22g heavier than the Instinct 3. I still recommend it, because ¥39,600 buys 10 ATM water resistance and a brighter display. Leave maps and logging to the smartphone, and ask the wrist for just altitude and weather. Hiking in Japan and abroad, I find that division of labor the least fuss.

As shown on Suunto's product page on Oct 18, 2026, with prices incl. tax. The original Core's price is what Suunto's Japanese official store shows now. The original's battery figure is for time display.

I'll get excited here. The battery is 15 ÷ 12, which makes it 1.25 times longer, and water resistance goes from 3 ATM to 10 ATM. The buttons are bigger and easier to press even with gloves on. The bezel changed from aluminum to stainless steel and the glass from mineral glass to Gorilla Glass, so it's a tougher mountain watch for the knocks against rock.

The price is double the original's. The Core 2 is the first to connect to the Suunto app over Bluetooth.

A barometric altimeter drifts with the weather

A barometric altimeter works out height from the fact that the higher you go, the thinner the air and the lower the pressure. Near the ground, a 1hPa difference is roughly an 8m difference in height. If a low-pressure system approaches and pressure drops 3hPa, that's 3 × 8, so the display climbs about 24m while you sleep in a hut.

A GPS watch can correct for satellite height, but the Core 2 doesn't have that. Its comparison, the Garmin Instinct 3 Dual Power 45mm, has GPS, weighs 52g and costs ¥71,800. The Core 2 is 22g heavier but ¥32,200 cheaper. The way to live with this watch is to reset the height wherever a map or sign tells you the true altitude. I've covered how to choose a GPS watch in how to choose a hiking GPS watch, and my pick.

Who it suits

It fits best someone who handles maps and logging with a smartphone app and asks the watch only for altitude and weather changes. With a 15-month battery, you don't need to bring a charger on every trip.

Next are people who have used the original Core for a long time. It's the same idea of a watch, with better water resistance and a more readable display.

The display is in English, and the operating temperature is listed as 0 to +40°C. If you want maps and long recordings on your wrist, choosing a GPS watch like the one in the T-Rex Dual Solar review is another way to go.
