The Typhon Nova Jacket fits a 50,000mm waterproof rating into 390g with a new membrane whose roughly 50-nanometer pores let only air through, and that is what impresses me. Millet announced it on Oct 20, 2026. If your climbs in the rain leave you soaked with sweat inside, buy it. It is 90g heavier and ¥13,200 more than the Typhon Stretch, though, so if you choose on weight and price, another jacket suits you better.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

Inside this jacket is not a Gore-Tex-style film but a new membrane of expanded polypropylene. The pores are uniform in size, so water stays out and only air gets through. So I count it as a jacket for fighting sweat. The 90g and ¥13,200 difference is easier to earn back the more you sweat on the climb.

Key points

  • The waterproof rating is 50,000mm, higher than the Typhon Stretch at 30,000mm and the Typhon 50000 Stretch at 20,000mm
  • The gap to the Typhon Stretch Jacket (300g, ¥36,300) is 90g and ¥13,200. That is ¥126.9 per gram
  • With the pants in the same fabric (356g, ¥41,800), the pair comes to 746g and ¥91,300

【New in Oct 2026】Millet Typhon Nova Jacket Review | 390g, 50,000mm, ¥49,500

The Typhon Nova is a waterproof jacket that "breathes." A 50,000mm rating at 390g is impressive

Sweat inside a rain jacket is a problem that a higher waterproof number does not fix. The Nova gives a different answer: the fabric membrane itself has a very slight air permeability.

Millet announced it on Oct 20, 2026. It costs ¥49,500 incl. tax (unisex), the most expensive of the 4 Typhon jackets compared on this page, 1 of them.

How I judged it

The first thing I looked at was what "breathable" actually means. The membrane is expanded polypropylene with 80% porosity and pores of about 50 nanometers, all the same size. Water stays out and only air passes. What I hesitated over was the price: it is ¥13,200 more than the Typhon Stretch Jacket. I still recommend it because it is a jacket that attacks the cause of the sweat from the membrane side. It suits people who climb at high intensity on day hikes up to hut stays and get soaked inside their rain gear.

How it differs from the Typhon Stretch, 50000 and Warm

ModelWeightWaterproof ratingPrice
Typhon Nova (this one)390g50,000mm¥49,500
Typhon Stretch300g30,000mm¥36,300
Typhon 50000 Stretch304g20,000mm¥35,200
Typhon Warm504g30,000mm¥39,600
As shown on Millet Japan's official online store on Oct 22, 2026. Prices are regular prices incl. tax.

The gap to the Typhon Stretch is 390g − 300g = 90g and ¥49,500 − ¥36,300 = ¥13,200. Spread over 10 outings, that is ¥1,320 each. I see it as the price for sweating less, possibly. If you choose on weight alone, the Stretch (300g) comes out ahead.

Going by numbers alone, the Typhon 50000 Stretch is 86g lighter and ¥14,300 cheaper, with a waterproof rating of 20,000mm. I wrote up the numbers and construction in the Typhon 50000 Stretch Jacket review.

It is 114g lighter than the Typhon Warm and ¥9,900 more. The Warm is a brushed-lining jacket for winter; the Nova lets sweat escape through breathability, so they do different jobs. The Typhon Warm Jacket review is here.

How does the breathability work on a cold day?

A membrane that lets air through makes you wonder whether wind will chill you. Millet says it tuned the airflow to block outside air and confirmed this in sub-zero lab tests. That is Millet's own testing, not my measurement.

A high waterproof rating also depends on how you use the jacket. Even with a high number, water gets in more easily where you sit down or where a pack presses against the fabric. Don't relax on the strength of the number alone.

As a pair, 746g and ¥91,300

The "Typhon Nova Pants" in the same fabric are 356g and ¥41,800 (unisex). 390g + 356g = 746g, and ¥49,500 + ¥41,800 = ¥91,300. Buying the pants too puts you in the ¥90,000 range, so choosing only the jacket first is the realistic move.

Who is it for?

It suits people who sweat heavily on the climb and are bothered by humidity inside their rain gear. The strength of this new jacket is that it answers "breathability" from the membrane side.

If weight comes first, the 300g Typhon Stretch is enough. For anyone keeping the cost down, starting there is plenty.
