The Arc'teryx Beta Insulated Jacket is ¥126,500 and 640 g (men's). It sits in the Fall 2026 new arrivals as a waterproof hardshell and insulation in one jacket. It's my pick if you don't want to split your outerwear into two pieces on cold mountains.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

This jacket uses a 90 g/m² synthetic insulation, wrapped in a fabric with a waterproof membrane. An insulation that holds its warmth better when wet, and a fabric that stops rain, fit into one layer. That's why I count it for anyone who wants a single outer layer where rain and cold arrive together.

Key points

  • 640 g, ¥126,500. 90 g lighter than the 730 g of a Beta Jacket plus Atom Hoody
  • Coreloft Continuous 90 (90 g/m²) insulation and a 2-layer GORE-TEX ePE outer
  • Pit zips, a helmet-compatible hood, a Recco reflector and hook-and-loop cuffs

Beta Insulated Jacket price and weight: ¥126,500, 640 g

The Beta Insulated Jacket (men's) costs ¥126,500 including tax and weighs 640 g. It comes in sizes XS to XL and is part of the Fall 2026 new arrivals.

It is an insulated shell: a waterproof fabric with synthetic insulation inside. I read it as the jacket that fills the gap between a rain shell and a down jacket.

How I judged it

The first thing I looked at was whether one jacket is enough. Carrying a Beta Jacket (375 g) and an Atom Hoody (355 g) separately comes to 730 g, and this jacket is 640 g. That is 90 g lighter. The price is ¥126,500 against ¥68,200 + ¥49,500 = ¥117,700, so ¥8,800 more. That is what I hesitated over. I still recommend it, because you only put on one layer. It suits people who walk ridgelines in the cold season.

Beta Insulated cuffs, pockets and hem: how is it built?

The cuffs are die-cut hook-and-loop tape that keeps bulk down and avoids snagging and damage. The hem cinches with adjusters on both sides. The back length is 79 cm in M. The Recco reflector is built in and not visible from outside.

The pocket zips are WaterTight and shed water, but they are not fully waterproof. The maker warns that moisture can damage them, so you should not leave items inside. The outer fabric is a thin 40 × 70 denier, so it is not an abrasion-resistant fabric like the Beta AR's.

What does synthetic insulation change when it gets wet?

This is the part I'm excited about. The strength of this jacket is that its insulation is synthetic, not down. Down struggles to regain its loft when wet; synthetic insulation has less of that weakness. Arc'teryx describes the Atom Hoody as synthetic insulation that stays warm when wet.

That insulation is wrapped in a 2-layer GORE-TEX ePE. ePE is a waterproof membrane made without adding PFAS, and it stops both rain and wind.

Comparing a Beta Jacket plus Atom Hoody

CombinationWeightPrice (incl. tax)
Beta Insulated (one jacket)640g¥126,500
Beta Jacket + Atom Hoody730g¥117,700
Difference (Insulated − two pieces)−90g+¥8,800
As shown on the official page on Oct 20, 2026. The Beta Jacket is 375 g and ¥68,200; the Atom Hoody is 355 g and ¥49,500. The totals and differences are my own calculations.

Split into two pieces, you can wear just the shell when it's warm and just the Atom Hoody when it's cold. The two-piece setup gives you more freedom to mix. The Beta Jacket review compares the shell side in more detail.

Where it falls short

At 640 g, it is heavy for a shell. With the insulation in, you will get hot wearing it on a warm day. The pit zips are there to let heat out, but two separate pieces give you more freedom.

Who is it for?

It suits people who walk routes in the cold season where rain or snow comes with the cold. It also suits people who want a single outer layer and fewer changes of clothes. If you also want to use it on warm days, splitting the shell and mid layer is another way to go.
