The Arc'teryx Kyanite Hoody is ¥34,100 and 425 g (men's). It sits in the Fall 2026 new arrivals as a fleece made from a new recycled fabric. I make it my pick for a first mid layer to wear under a hardshell.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

The Kyanite is a two-layer fabric: abrasion-resistant 4-way stretch nylon outside, brushed fleece inside. Tough on the outside, moisture-moving on the inside. That's why I count it as a hiking mid layer that you wear under a shell and keep moving in.

Key points

  • 425 g, ¥34,100. 30 g heavier than the Kyanite Jacket and ¥4,400 more
  • 70 g heavier than the Atom Hoody (355 g, ¥49,500), but ¥15,400 cheaper
  • Polartec Power Stretch Pro, fabric made in the USA. The fabric changed to a recycled material in Fall 2026

Kyanite Hoody price and weight: ¥34,100, 425 g

The Kyanite Hoody (men's) costs ¥34,100 including tax and weighs 425 g. It comes in sizes XS to XL, and the fabric has changed to a new recycled material.

It is a versatile fleece designed for short climbs, cold-day hikes, and even the chill when you first wake up.

How I judged it

The first thing I looked at was whether it has a hood. The hoody is 425 g and the hoodless jacket is 395 g, a 30 g difference. The price gap is ¥4,400. Next I compared it with the Atom Hoody (355 g): 70 g lighter, but ¥15,400 more. What I hesitated over was whether to add 30 g for a hood. I still recommend it, because a cold neck matters more than a lighter jacket. It suits people who walk ridgelines in chilly weather.

Kyanite Hoody cuffs, hem and zip: how is it built?

The cuffs, hem and collar use a durable Tanica stretch material. The front zip is a No Slip Zip with a chin guard. The back length is 67 cm in M.

The fabric is made in the USA and has changed to a new one using recycled material. The low-profile hood is slim enough to layer under a shell without bunching.

What's good about a two-layer fabric?

This is the part I'm excited about. The two layers do different jobs, so you take it on and off less often. The outside is abrasion-resistant nylon that resists fuzzing even when a pack strap rubs it. The inside is brushed polyester that moves moisture away from your body.

The fabric is Polartec Power Stretch Pro. It stretches in four directions, so the hem is less likely to ride up when you raise your arms. Gussets under the arms also hold the hem down.

Comparing the Jacket and the Atom Hoody

ModelWeightPrice (incl. tax)Per gram
Kyanite Hoody425g¥34,100¥80
Kyanite Jacket395g¥29,700¥75
Atom Hoody355g¥49,500¥139
As shown on the official page on Oct 20, 2026. Price per gram is my own calculation: price ÷ weight.

The gap to the Jacket is 425 g − 395 g = 30 g, and ¥34,100 − ¥29,700 = ¥4,400. If you often skip the hood, the Jacket is enough.

The Atom Hoody is a different kind of mid layer, with synthetic insulation. The Beta Insulated review compares the choice of putting insulation and shell in one jacket.

Before you buy the Kyanite Hoody: check the model number and colors

The model number of the men's Kyanite Hoody is X000008446. It is separate from the women's and from the pullover hoody, so checking the number when you shop helps you avoid mixing them up.

As of Oct 20, the official store shows 2 colors: Cloud and Black. Sizes run from XS to XL.

Where it falls short

Fleece lets wind through. It suits layering under a shell more than wearing it alone on a windy ridge. For the same weight, you get less warmth than from the insulated Atom Hoody.

Who is it for?

It suits people looking for a mid layer under a hardshell in the ¥30,000 range. It also suits people who want something that stays comfortable while they keep moving on hikes and short climbs in the cold. If you want to wear it alone on a windy day, layering a wind shell over it is another way to go.
