Home › Rankings › Best Hiking Gaiters: 6 Picks

This is my conclusion as of Oct 22, 2026. I choose hiking gaiters on three things: length, weight and price. No. 1 is the fall/winter 2026 newcomer, the Outdoor Research Ferrosi Trail Gaiter (75g, ¥7,480). All six cost ¥10,000 or less, and the cheapest is the Salomon Low at ¥3,300 (121g).

The Gear Nerd's Pick

A gaiter is something that stops pebbles, sand and mud from getting inside your shoe. If it only has to stop things, lighter is easier on your feet. That's why I put the Ferrosi Trail Gaiter, the lightest of the six at 75g, at No. 1.

Key points

  • The No. 1 Ferrosi weighs 75g, under a quarter of the heaviest of the six, the ISUKA GTX Long (S, 320g)
  • No. 2, the Salomon Low, is 121g at ¥3,300. It's 46g heavier than No. 1 and ¥4,180 cheaper
  • Only the ISUKA GTX Long, 35–40cm tall, has the length to keep snow out. The other five are short, covering from the instep to the ankle

A new 75g hiking gaiter is out

The Outdoor Research Ferrosi Trail Gaiter is a new model whose Japanese official page uses fall/winter 2026 images. It weighs 75g.

This article compares 6 gaiters for hiking. A gaiter is a small accessory that covers the gap between shoe and ankle. The numbers come from each official page, and prices include tax.

I looked at length, weight and price, in that order

The first thing I checked was length: short, covering over the shoe, or long, covering up to the shin. Then weight, and finally price per gram.

What gave me pause was whether to put the ¥3,300 Salomon Low at No. 1. But I figured that anything you wear on your feet should be as light as possible, so I took the 75g Ferrosi. The ranking is among what you can buy on Rakuten.

From each official page on Oct 22, 2026; prices include tax. Weights are the figures as the makers list them, and some pages don't say whether they cover a pair or one gaiter. Outdoor Research's Japanese page gives no unit, so I read the figures as grams, matching the High II, which the US official page confirms at 220g.

Price per gram, and the weight differences

ModelPrice per gramDifference from the Ferrosi
Salomon Low¥27.3+46g, −¥4,180
Salomon High¥34.3+63g, −¥2,750
Rocky Mountain Low II¥53.3+90g, +¥1,320
Rocky Mountain High II¥45.0+145g, +¥2,420
ISUKA Long (S)¥30.9+245g, +¥2,420
My own calculation. Per gram is price ÷ weight (e.g. 3,300 ÷ 121 = 27.3). The Ferrosi is ¥7,480 and 75g (¥99.7), and the differences are subtractions from the Ferrosi.

The Ferrosi is 46g lighter than the Salomon Low and ¥4,180 more. That works out to about ¥91 for each gram saved (4,180 ÷ 46). Across the six, the price spread is 3x (¥3,300–9,900) and the weight spread is 4.7x (75–350g).

Why this order

RankModelWhy it's ranked here
1FerrosiThe lightest of 6, and new for fall/winter 2026. But at ¥99.7 per 1g, it's the most expensive
2Salomon LowThe cheapest of 6 at ¥3,300, or ¥27.3 per gram. But 46g heavier than No. 1
3Salomon HighTall enough to cover the ankle bone, and only 17g and ¥1,430 more than the Low. But no figure is given for the height it covers
4Rocky Mountain Low IIThe fabric is 420D pack cloth. But at 165g and ¥8,800, it costs about 2.7 times the Salomon Low
5Rocky Mountain High IIThe US official page also confirms 220g. But it's the heaviest of the short ones
6ISUKA LongThe only long one of the six, with GORE-TEX and a snow guard for deep snow. But at 320g or more, it's heavy for a summer low-mountain hike

If in doubt, the Ferrosi Trail Gaiter. The reason: at 75g it's the lightest of the 6, and it's new for fall/winter 2026. To keep the price down, the Salomon Low at ¥3,300.

No. 1 Outdoor Research Ferrosi Trail Gaiter

I'll say this one with enthusiasm. It weighs 75g, and the fabric is stretch made of 46% recycled nylon, 40% nylon and 14% polyurethane. You can put it on without taking your shoes off, and it's fixed by the boot lace hook. A UPF 50+ rating is listed too.

The catch: ¥7,480 is about 2.3 times the Salomon Low. It has water resistance, but no waterproof rating figure is given.

No. 2 Salomon Trail Gaiters Low

121g at ¥3,300. It comes in 3 sizes, S, M and L, matched to shoe sizes 22.5–30cm. It's fixed with hook-and-loop and keeps gravel out of your shoe.

The catch: it's 46g heavier than No. 1 and lists nothing about waterproofing. It suits someone who wants to try a first pair cheaply.

No. 3 Salomon Trail Gaiters High

138g at ¥4,730. Same fabric as the Low, and tall enough to protect the ankle bone from impacts and scrapes. The difference from the Low is 17g and ¥1,430.

The catch: the gap is small, so the difference from the Low comes down to how much of the ankle it covers.

No. 4 Outdoor Research Rocky Mountain Low Gaiter II

165g at ¥8,800. It's 420D pack cloth of 100% nylon, with abrasion resistance and water resistance. The shape was updated to fit a wider range of boots.

The catch: for a short gaiter it's 44g heavier than the Salomon Low and ¥5,500 more. The difference is what you pay for a stronger fabric.

No. 5 Outdoor Research Rocky Mountain High Gaiter II

220g at ¥9,900. The difference from the Low is 55g and ¥1,100. It's the same 420D pack cloth, closed at the front with hook-and-loop.

The catch: it's the heaviest of the short ones, and no height figure is given.

No. 6 ISUKA GORE-TEX Long Gaiter

Height is 35cm for S and 40cm for L. It has a double zipper that opens from the foot end, and a snow guard to keep deep snow out. Weight is 320g for S and 350g for L, at ¥9,900.

The catch: it's heavy for a summer low-mountain hike, and you don't need the length there. It's a pick for people heading to snowy mountains. I put the snow gear, such as crampons, together in How to choose winter traction gear.
