Home › Rankings › Best Bear Sprays: 4 Picks

This is my conclusion as of Oct 22, 2026. I choose bear spray on three things: spray distance, spray time and price. No. 1 is the Fujikon Bazooka Bakuchoho, announced in June 2026 (10m, 12+ seconds, 280ml). Of the three that reach 10m it is the cheapest, at ¥6,280 on Rakuten. Bear spray cannot be taken on a plane.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

Bear spray isn't a tool for avoiding bears. It's the last move once you've met one. The longer it keeps spraying, the more you can re-aim after a miss. That's why I put the Bazooka Bakuchoho, which sprays longest of the four, at No. 1.

Key points

  • No. 1, the Bazooka Bakuchoho, sprays 10m for 12+ seconds. At ¥22.4 per ml, it's the cheapest of the 3 that reach 10m
  • No. 2, the Kuma Ichimokusan, is made in Japan and sprays about 10m for about 10 seconds. The official online shop price with holder is ¥14,080
  • The Ministry of the Environment says many products have a short range of about 5m. Let the bear come close, then spray at its face

A new bear spray reaches 10m and sprays for 12 seconds

In June 2026, Fujikon announced the “Bazooka Bakuchoho,” which sprays 10m for 12+ seconds. In August it also released the 300ml “High Power Jet.”

This article compares 4 bear sprays to carry when hiking. The numbers come from each maker's announcement and product pages, and I've noted the source wherever a price is given.

I looked at distance, time and price, in that order

The first thing I checked was spray distance, then spray time, then price per ml. What gave me pause was which of the two 10m sprays, the Kuma Ichimokusan or the Bazooka Bakuchoho, to put at No. 1. The difference was spray time and price, so I took the Bazooka Bakuchoho.

The Ministry of the Environment says many products have a short range of about 5m, so you have to let the bear come close before spraying. So I didn't decide that longer distance is always better; I weighted the time you have to spray again after a miss. The ranking is among what you can buy on Rakuten.

Spray distance is the figure the makers measured, such as in still air. Prices: the Kuma Ichimokusan is Bio Kagaku's official online shop price with holder; the Long-Range spray and High Power Jet are tax-included prices announced by Fujikon; the Bazooka Bakuchoho and SABRE are Rakuten listings on Oct 22, 2026. “—” means not stated. The out-of-ranking one is the spray I couldn't find on Rakuten.

Per ml and per second: how many yen, how many ml

ModelPrice per mlAmount per second
Bazooka Bakuchoho¥22.423.3ml
Kuma Ichimokusan¥50.328.0ml
Frontiersman Max¥51.7About 36ml
Long-Range spray¥18.2―
My own calculation. Per ml is price ÷ capacity (e.g. 6,280 ÷ 280 = 22.4). Per second is capacity ÷ spray time (I used 12 seconds for the Bazooka, 10 for the Kuma Ichimokusan, and 6.5, the middle of 6–7, for the SABRE).

The cheapest per ml is the Long-Range spray at ¥18.2, which reaches only about 5m. Among the 3 that reach 10m or more, the Bazooka Bakuchoho's ¥22.4 was about half the Kuma Ichimokusan's.

Why this order

RankModelWhy it's ranked here
1Bazooka BakuchohoSprays longest of the four, 12+ seconds, and is the cheapest of the three that reach 10m. But it was announced in June 2026, so there's no track record yet
2Kuma IchimokusanMade in Japan, 10m and about 10 seconds, with a 5-year rule of thumb for use. But with holder it's ¥14,080, about 2.2 times No. 1
3Frontiersman Max12.0m is the farthest of the four. But it sprays only 6–7 seconds, the shortest
4Long-Range sprayThe cheapest at ¥3,278, but its 5–6m falls on the “short” side the Ministry of the Environment describes

If in doubt, the Bazooka Bakuchoho. The reason: it sprays for 12+ seconds and is the cheapest of the 3 that reach 10m (¥22.4 per ml).

No. 1 Fujikon Bazooka Bakuchoho

I'll say this one with enthusiasm. It sprays 12+ seconds, the longest of the four. It reaches 10m, holds 280ml and has 2% capsaicin. Of the three that reach 10m, it's the cheapest.

The catch: it was announced in June 2026 as a new model, and as far as I could see, no one has published a test of it yet. The price is one Rakuten shop's listing, and disposing of it after use takes some effort.

No. 2 Bio Kagaku Kuma Ichimokusan

Content 280ml, sprays about 10m for about 10 seconds. The spray is 275g and the holder 78g, 353g together. Bio Kagaku's official page gives 5 years from manufacture as the guide for use.

The catch: ¥14,080 with holder is ¥7,800 more than No. 1. It suits someone who can accept that difference as the price of buying Japanese-made.

No. 3 SABRE Frontiersman Max Bear Spray

This is SABRE's 234mL, sold by mont-bell, with a spray distance of 12.0m, the farthest of the four. A 272mL version also exists, spraying 7–8 seconds.

The catch: the 234mL sprays only 6–7 seconds, and on Rakuten it starts at ¥12,100. It's a pick for people who want to aim from far away (1 model).

No. 4 Fujikon Long-Range Bear Spray

A direct-hit type with 180ml, ¥3,278 and a range of 5–6m. It's the cheapest of the 4, and ¥18.2 per ml as well.

The catch: it falls under the Ministry of the Environment's “range of about 5m,” and no spray time is given. It's an entry point if you want to get one spray first.

Out of ranking: Fujikon High Power Jet

300ml, about 10m, 9+ seconds, ¥8,778. It went on sale on 2026/8/31. I couldn't find it on Rakuten, so it isn't in the ranking.

The Ministry of the Environment on use, and the airplane rules

The Ministry of the Environment manual says that capsaicin irritates mucous membranes, so it matters to spray toward the bear's face. Depending on the wind, it can reach the person spraying too. It recommends carrying it where you can use it right away, and practicing with a training spray.

On planes, aviation law treats things that could explode as dangerous goods, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism tells you to check with your airline on whether an item can go in the cabin or checked luggage. The mont-bell introduction for the Frontiersman says aviation law bans it in the cabin. If you travel by air, you can rent or buy one at your destination. For trains and buses, check the rules of the company you'll ride first.

For bear bells, climbing plans and other preparations, see How to choose an emergency sheet and a zelt.

Who is it for?

If you want to keep spraying and re-aim, the Bazooka Bakuchoho at No. 1. If you want Japanese-made, the Kuma Ichimokusan at No. 2. If you want to aim from far away, the SABRE at No. 3. If you want to start in the ¥3,000 range, the Long-Range spray at No. 4. For the whole load in your pack, see the day-hike packing list and first-aid kits. If you'll mount it on your hip or shoulder, also read how to choose a pack.

The Ministry of the Environment says many products have a short range of about 5m. The four here run from 5–6m to 12.0m, and three list 10m or more.

If I have a bear bell, do I still need bear spray?

The Ministry of the Environment says to carry it where you can use it right away. Keep it on the front of your body in a holder, not at the bottom of your pack.
