Home › How to choose › Day-Hike Packing List

This is my conclusion as of Oct 22, 2026. A day-hike packing list can be narrowed to 12 items. Without water, the load is about 1.1kg, and with 1.5 L of water about 2.6kg. If in doubt, always pack the four: rain gear, headlamp, water bottle and first aid (469g).

The Gear Nerd's Pick

Before adding things, decide first on what protects your life. The order to decide in: the rain gear, map, trail food and communication device the National Police Agency lists come first. That's why I split the 12 items into safety and comfort, and lined up weight and price.

Skip the reasoning and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Without water and trail food, the load is about 1.0kg: pack 470g, rain jacket 300g, headlamp 88g, and more
  • Add 1.5 L of water and it's about 2.6kg. Water alone is over half the load (1,500 ÷ 2,599 = 58%)
  • The rain gear, headlamp, water bottle and first aid come to just 469g

A day-hike packing list narrows to 12 items

On your first day hike, what you struggle with is not what to pack but what to leave out. This article is a list of 12 items for day hikes on low mountains in summer and fall.

In its overview of mountain accidents, the National Police Agency lists rain gear, a zelt, a map, a compass, trail food and communication devices as things to carry. On that foundation, I added weight and price figures. Prices are tax-included official prices.

I looked at safety first, then weight

The first thing I checked was what the National Police Agency lists. Next, things that matter when you can't get home, like a headlamp and first aid. Last, I added the comfort items. What gave me pause was whether to include a bear bell in the 12. The Ministry of the Environment lists things that make noise, so I included it.

I chose the products from the picks in the articles where I've compared them on this site. Shoes, socks and a base layer are worn, so they aren't counted in the load weight.

1.1kg of gear, 2.6kg with water

Add trail foodCalorieMate 80g1,099g
Add 1.5 L of water1 L of water is about 1kg2,599g
My own calculation. 470 + 300 + 88 + 36 + 45 + 80 = 1,019, + 80 = 1,099, + 1,500 = 2,599. Map, plan and phone are not included.

Water makes up 58% of the load (1,500 ÷ 2,599). If you want a lighter pack, the first thing to look at is the amount of water, not the gear.

The rain gear, headlamp, water bottle and first aid come to just 469g (300 + 88 + 36 + 45). That's 46% of the 1,019g load (469 ÷ 1,019).

My own calculation. 14,850 + 36,300 + 13,530 + 1,320 + 3,300 + 2,750 = 72,050, and 22,550 + 3,080 + 5,280 = 30,910.

Getting everything with my picks comes to about ¥100,000. You don't need to buy everything in 1 go. The rain jacket is ¥36,300, or over 1 in 3 (35%) of the total, so when budget is a worry, redoing the rain jacket choice is the quickest place to start.

Start with the pack and rain gear

For a day hike, the 21 L pack is my pick, the Speed Lite 21 at 470g and ¥14,850. I wrote up how to think about pack capacity in 21 L for day hikes, 30 L for huts, 50 L for backpacking.

If in doubt, the Speed Lite 21. The reason: at 470g it's light, at 22.4g per liter, and for ¥14,850 it holds a day hike's load.

For rain gear, the 300g Typhon Stretch. It's one of the things the National Police Agency lists; for how to compare rain jackets, see the ranking of 5 hiking rain jackets.

Headlamp, water bottle and first aid

The headlamp is the Petzl Actik Core, 625 lumens at 88g. Even on a day hike, it's your one light if the descent runs late. I compared them in the hiking headlamp ranking.

The water bottle is the EVERNEW Water Carry, which holds 1.5 L at 36g. It folds up, and the container weighs 24g per liter. The 6 I compared are in the hiking water bottle article.

Bear bell and trail food

The Ministry of the Environment's guideline describes a bear bell as a way to let bears know people are around. The Magic Bear Bell weighs about 80g and goes silent when you turn the screw. For comparing bear sprays, see the bear spray picks; for other safety gear, see How to choose an emergency sheet and a zelt.

For the same 500kcal, CalorieMate is 100g and a jelly drink is 361g. That's a 261g difference, and for a day hike, switching just one meal to a solid makes it lighter.

Who is it for?

If you want to get safety in order first, start with the four: rain gear, headlamp, water bottle and first aid (469g). If you want a lighter load, start by revisiting the amount of water. For shoes, see low-cut trekking shoes; for socks, hiking socks; for underwear layers, the base layer article.

FAQ

What is the minimum a beginner needs for a day hike?

Take the rain gear, map, compass, trail food and communication device the National Police Agency lists, and add water and a headlamp: that's the 12 items. The rain gear, headlamp, water bottle and first aid come to just 469g.

How many kg should a day-hike load be?

For these 12 items, about 1.0kg without water and trail food, and about 2.6kg with 1.5 L of water and the food. Water is 58% of it.

Do I need a headlamp for a day hike?

Pack one. In case your descent runs late, an 88g unit fits. Even on a day hike, there's a chance you'll be walking after dark.

How much does everything on the packing list cost?

With my picks for the 9 items that list a price, it's about ¥100,000 (¥102,960). The rain jacket is ¥36,300, or 35% of the total.

Should I take bear spray on a day hike?

It depends on whether bears turn up where you're going. The Ministry of the Environment says to carry bear spray where you can use it right away if you meet one. I compared them in the bear spray article.

What should I wear for a day hike?

A base layer against your skin, socks and rain gear are the foundation. On this list I picked The North Face's roughly 80g base layer.
