Home › Rankings › Hiking Outerwear by Value: 5 Picks

My conclusion as of Oct 21, 2026: judge the value of hiking outerwear not by the price tag but by price per 10,000 mm of waterproof rating and price per gram. First is the Millet Typhon Stretch Jacket (300 g, ¥36,300, waterproof rating 30,000 mm), second the 50000 Stretch (304 g, ¥35,200). The three things to judge are weight, waterproof rating and role; to stay at ¥30,000 or less, take No. 3, the Flowwrap Hoody (285 g, ¥29,700), or No. 5, the Houdini (105 g, ¥16,500).

The Gear Nerd's Pick

A waterproof jacket's value is not decided by how low the price tag is. The waterproof rating is a number measured in the height of a water column. 30,000 mm means a fabric that withstands the pressure of a 30 m column of water. So I judge waterproof value by the price per 10,000 mm of rating. The Typhon Stretch costs only ¥1,100 more than the 50000, yet its rating is 10,000 mm higher, which brings the price per 10,000 mm down to ¥12,100.

Key points

  • Price per 10,000 mm of rating for the 2 waterproofs: ¥12,100 for the Typhon Stretch, ¥17,600 for the Typhon 50000
  • Price per gram runs from ¥80 for the Kyanite Hoody to ¥157.1 for the Houdini. The 5 pieces weigh 105 to 425 g.
  • Within ¥30,000: the Flowwrap Hoody (¥29,700) and the Houdini (¥16,500), 2 pieces

Judge hiking outerwear by value per 10,000 mm and per gram, not by the price tag

Buy cheap and it leaks in the rain. Buy expensive and you rarely use it. The confusion over value in hiking outerwear mostly sits between those two.

This time I picked five good-value pieces by weight, waterproof rating and role, not by price alone. The figures come from each official page from Oct 13 to 20, 2026, and prices include tax.

How I chose

The first thing I looked at was the role of each piece: waterproof, wind-stopping or insulation. You can't compare pieces with different roles by price alone.

Next, for the two waterproofs I worked out the price per 10,000 mm of rating, and for the other three the price per gram. The question was whether to put pieces at ¥20,000 or less on top. A cheapness that lets rain through defeats the purpose, so the two waterproofs go on top. The ranking covers only pieces you can buy on Rakuten.

No. 5: Patagonia Houdini Jacket105g¥16,500¥157.1Stops wind only
Figures are from each official page from Oct 13 to 20, 2026; prices include tax. Per gram is my own calculation: price ÷ weight. The waterproof rating is the figure the brand publishes.

Dividing the 2 waterproofs by every 10,000 mm gives ¥12,100 (36,300 ÷ 3) for the Typhon Stretch and ¥17,600 (35,200 ÷ 2) for the Typhon 50000.

Why this order

RankModelWhy it's ranked here
1Typhon StretchOnly ¥1,100 more than the 50000, yet 10,000 mm higher in waterproof rating. ¥12,100 per 10,000 mm
2Typhon 50000Only 4 g heavier, but ¥1,100 cheaper. ¥17,600 per 10,000 mm
3Flow Wrap Hoodie285 g for ¥29,700. Not waterproof; its role is to stop wind
4Kyanite HoodyAt ¥80 per gram the cheapest of the 5, but the heaviest at 425 g
5Houdini105 g for ¥16,500. Its role is only to stop wind

No. 1: Millet Typhon Stretch Jacket | 300 g, ¥36,300

I'm enthusiastic about this one. The waterproof rating is 30,000 mm, the weight is 300 g and the price is ¥36,300. Turn the rating into a price per 10,000 mm and it is the lowest of the five. The more you walk the mountains in rain, the more it pays for itself.

Here's the weak spot. It costs ¥1,100 more than the ¥35,200 Typhon 50000, and it is 4 g lighter, but the fabric specification differs. If a rating of 20,000 mm is enough for you, No. 2 changes little.

For a comparison with its sibling model, see the Typhon 50000 review.

No. 2: Millet Typhon 50000 Stretch | 304 g, ¥35,200

Waterproof rating 20,000 mm, breathability 50,000 g/m2/24h, 3 layers of 15-denier fabric. At ¥115.8 per gram it is the cheapest of the 2 waterproofs. For ordinary rain on a low mountain, these numbers are enough.

Here's the weak spot. Per 10,000 mm, it costs ¥5,500 more than No. 1.

I wrote about it in more detail under No. 4 of the hardshell rankings.

No. 3: Finetrack Flowwrap Hoody | 285 g, ¥29,700

A fabric that stretches 220% sideways, at 285 g. A wind-stopping piece to wear while walking a low mountain in autumn comes in under ¥30,000. It was renewed in early October 2026.

Here's the weak spot. The waterproof rating is 10,000 mm, so you need a separate piece for rain cover.

For the difference from the old model, see the Flowwrap Hoody review.

No. 4: Arc'teryx Kyanite Hoody | 425 g, ¥34,100

At ¥80 per gram it is the lowest of the 5. A brushed fleece-like fabric with a slim hood that guards your neck on a chilly ridge.

Here's the weak spot. At 425 g it is the heaviest of the five. If weight comes first, choose from the three above.

No. 5: Patagonia Houdini Jacket | 105 g, ¥16,500

A 1.2 oz ripstop weighing 105 g. The lightest and cheapest of the five. You can carry insurance for a windy ridge for under ¥20,000.

Here's the weak spot. It has almost no insulation and no waterproofing. Even with good value, it is not the star on its own.

I compared other wind-stopping pieces in the wind shell rankings.

Extra: Montbell Storm Cruiser Jacket | 254 g, ¥22,000

A waterproof rating of 20,000 mm or more and a weight of 254 g (average). At ¥86.6 per gram, going by the numbers alone, it is the best value among the waterproofs. It is sold only in Montbell's official shop, so I have not put a buy button here. The ranking covers only pieces you can buy on Rakuten.

Is there hiking outerwear for ¥20,000 or less?

Of the 5 pieces, the only one at ¥20,000 or less is the Houdini (¥16,500). The 2 waterproofs start in the ¥35,000 range, and the one that stays within ¥30,000 is the Flowwrap (1 wind-stopper at ¥29,700).

No piece among these 5 is a waterproof at ¥20,000 or less. The only waterproof in the ¥20,000 range is the Montbell Storm Cruiser (¥22,000), the extra I listed (1 item) that you can't buy on Rakuten.
