Home › Rankings › Hiking Apparel Picks

My conclusion as of Oct 21, 2026: choose hiking apparel in three layers: base layer, mid layer and shell. For autumn and winter on low mountains, my picks are the Finetrack Drought Largo (190 g, ¥8,250) as the base layer, the Flowwrap Hoody (285 g, ¥29,700) as the mid layer and the Millet Typhon 50000 (304 g, ¥35,200) as the shell, 779 g for the three. The three things to judge are sweat, wind and rain; add pants and socks and the five pieces come to 1,311 g and ¥92,730.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

What troubles you most in autumn and winter mountains is chill from sweat, more than the cold. A base layer wet with sweat takes your body heat as it dries. So I put the apparel budget into the base layer before the shell. The ¥8,250 Drought Largo is less than a tenth of the five-piece total of ¥92,730.

Key points

  • The 3 pieces of base layer, mid layer and shell are 190 g + 285 g + 304 g, 779 g. The price is ¥8,250 + ¥29,700 + ¥35,200, ¥73,150
  • Add the Semnoz Ripstop pants (402 g, ¥16,500) and the Caravan RL Merino socks (about 130 g, ¥3,080) and the 5 pieces come to 1,311 g and ¥92,730
  • For the mid layer: the Flowwrap (285 g) to stop wind, the Kyanite Hoody (425 g) for brushed warmth, or the Atom Hoody (355 g) as insulation for rest stops

The best hiking apparel is built in three layers: base, mid and shell

One thick jacket is not enough for hiking. You stack three roles: a base layer that moves sweat away from your skin, a mid layer that keeps you warm and a shell that stops wind and rain. Change the number of layers and the same clothes get you through a hot climb and a cold rest stop.

What confuses beginners is which of the three to spend money on. From the new 2026 releases and the standards, I picked five pieces to wear on low mountains in autumn and winter. The figures come from each official page from Oct 13 to 20, 2026, and prices include tax.

How I chose

The first thing I looked at was whether each piece stops sweat, wind or rain. Next I lined up weight and price.

The question was whether to spend the most on the shell. On low mountains in autumn and winter I assumed sweat chill hits more days, so I chose the base layer first. The picks here cover only pieces you can buy on Rakuten.

Adding it up, the 3 pieces across 3 layers come to 779 g and ¥73,150. With pants and socks, the 5 pieces come to ¥92,730.

Base layer: Finetrack Drought Largo Long Sleeve | 190 g, ¥8,250

I'm enthusiastic about this one. It is 100% polyester, and the official site lists spring, fall and winter as its seasons. At 190 g (M) and ¥8,250, it is the cheapest of the 5 pieces. It is a price that lets you put budget into the 1st layer that guards against sweat chill.

Here's the weak spot. It is not wool, so on long trips you may notice odor. A lighter option is the Drought Quad (125 g, ¥6,985).

I compare other base layers in the base layer rankings.

Mid layer: Finetrack Flowwrap Hoody | 285 g, ¥29,700

A piece renewed in early October 2026, with a fabric that stretches 220% sideways. It stops wind and weighs 285 g, so you can keep it on while walking.

Here's the weak spot. The waterproof rating is 10,000 mm, so rain cover is a separate piece. For brushed warmth, the next option is the Kyanite Hoody (425 g, ¥34,100); for wearing when you stop for a rest, the Atom Hoody (355 g, ¥49,500).

I wrote how to compare the three pieces in Autumn Hiking Outerwear.

Shell: Millet Typhon 50000 Stretch | 304 g, ¥35,200

A 3-layer jacket in 15-denier fabric: waterproof rating 20,000 mm, breathability 50,000 g/m2/24h, 304 g. You carry 1 for when it rains, and it doesn't take much room in your pack.

Here's the weak spot. The fabric is thin, so be careful on rocky mountains where it scrapes. If you want 80-denier fabric that resists abrasion, the next option is the Beta Jacket (375 g, ¥68,200).

You can see the difference in toughness in the hardshell rankings.

Pants: Millet Semnoz Ripstop Pants | 402 g, ¥16,500

A water-repellent ripstop outside and a brushed mesh inside. A good first pair for low mountains in winter.

Here's the weak spot. They are not waterproof, so on rain or sleet days layer waterproof pants over them.

I lined up five pairs in the winter hiking pants rankings.

Socks: Caravan RL Merino Retro Trekking | about 130 g, ¥3,080

Mid-weight socks of 60% merino wool, knit as separate left and right socks. At ¥51.3 per 1% of wool, they had the lowest price among the 3 pairs with the most wool.

I compare the other four pairs in the hiking socks rankings.

In what order should a beginner buy?

I would buy in this order: base layer, shell, then mid layer. The base layer costs ¥8,250 and starts your defense against sweat chill right away. The shell is for rainy days, and the mid layer comes after.

Cotton clothes dry slowly when wet and take your body heat. For hiking, switching to a polyester or wool base layer is the first step.

Which mountain, which jacket

  • Day hike on a low mountain in November: these 5 pieces work as they are
  • Long stops on a ridge: add the Atom Hoody to the mid layer
