The verdict as of Oct 21, 2026. For your first winter pair on low mountains, pick fleece-lined: #1 is the Millet Semnoz Ripstop Pants (402 g, ¥16,500) and #2 the Finetrack Flowwrap Pants (225 g, ¥19,800). Three things keep you from a bad pick: lining, weight and waterproofing. If you want something to pull over them in rain and snow, take #3, the Typhon Warm Pants.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
What keeps winter pants warm is the layer of air trapped between fabric and leg. A brushed lining holds air between its fibers, so your legs stay warmer at rest stops even without tights. That's why I choose a first winter pair for low mountains on a fleece lining and a ¥16,500 price before weight.
Key points
- The 5 pairs weigh 225 to 590 g. The lightest (Flowwrap) and the heaviest (Monte Rosa) differ by 365 g
- Price per gram runs from ¥30.8 (Monte Rosa) to ¥88.0 (Flowwrap). The lighter the pair, the more each gram costs
- On rainy days, the Typhon Warm Pants (30,000 mm waterproof rating). Fleece-lined pants stop at water-repellent
With winter pants, check the lining before the weight
A November low mountain makes you sweat on the climb and chills your legs at the summit break. Add tights under summer pants and you overheat on the way up. That is most of the winter-pants dilemma.
From the new autumn/winter 2026 releases and the staples, I picked the 5 pairs I would wear on low mountains in winter. The numbers are from each official page as shown on Oct 18, 2026, and prices include tax.
How I chose
First I looked at the lining: brushed, stretchy or waterproof. Which one you need in winter depends on what bothers you on the mountain.
Then I lined up weight and price, and used price per gram to see what lightness costs. The ranking tripped me up on weight: the lightest pair, at 225 g, is not waterproof. I put #1 first where it counts most on a winter low mountain, which is the chill at rest stops. The ranking covers pairs you can buy on Rakuten.

| Model | Weight (men's M) | Price | Per gram | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 Millet Semnoz Ripstop Pants | 402g | ¥16,500 | ¥41.0 | Fleece-lined, water-repellent |
| #2 Finetrack Flowwrap Pants | 225g | ¥19,800 | ¥88.0 | Sheds wind and snow, very stretchy |
| #3 Millet Typhon Warm Pants | 348g | ¥33,000 | ¥94.8 | Waterproof, fleece-lined |
| #4 Millet Monte Rosa Pants | 590g | ¥18,150 | ¥30.8 | Stretchy double weave |
| #5 Millet Typhon Warm Next Stretch Pants | 484g | ¥33,000 | ¥68.2 | Waterproof, fleece-lined (previous model) |
The lighter the pair, the more each gram costs. The lowest price belongs to the fleece-lined #1, the Semnoz.
Why this order
| Rank | Model | Why it's ranked here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Semnoz Ripstop Pants | Fleece-lined, and the cheapest of the 5 at ¥16,500 |
| 2 | Flow Wrap Pants | The lightest at 225 g, but not waterproof, and ¥3,300 more than #1 |
| 3 | Typhon Warm Pants | 30,000 mm waterproof rating, fleece-lined. Twice the price of #1 |
| 4 | Monte Rosa Pants | Lowest price per gram, but the heaviest at 590 g |
| 5 | Typhon Warm Next Stretch Pants | Same price and waterproof rating as #3, but a previous model that is 136 g heavier |
#1 Millet Semnoz Ripstop Pants
I'll say it with some heat. The outside is water-repellent ripstop, the inside a brushed mesh, at 402 g and ¥16,500. It is the first pair for people who want to skip layering tights. The inseam is one seamless piece of fabric, so there is less to rub with every step.
This is the weak spot. It is water-repellent, not waterproof, so on rain or sleet days you pull waterproof pants over it. The cut is roomy: the hip in M is 120 cm.
Millet Semnoz Ripstop Pants (men's)
Lowest price on Rakuten: ¥15,150 (as of 10/20). Prices change daily. For clothing, check the maker's size chart (height, chest, waist) against your own measurements. If unsure, check the shop's return and exchange terms.

#2 Finetrack Flowwrap Pants
At 225 g, the fabric stretches 220% sideways. The 2026 update added a gusset in the crotch, so it binds less on climbs with big steps. If you choose on weight, this is the one.
This is the weak spot. The waterproof rating is 10,000 mm and the seams are not taped, so heavy rain is not its strength. It suits dry snow and windy days.
finetrack Flow Wrap Pants (men's)
Lowest price on Rakuten: ¥19,800 (as of 10/20). Prices change daily. For clothing, check the maker's size chart (height, chest, waist) against your own measurements. If unsure, check the shop's return and exchange terms.

#3 Millet Typhon Warm Pants
30,000 mm waterproof rating, 40,000 g/m2/24h breathability, brushed lining. New on Oct 14, and 136 g lighter than the previous model. In rain and sleet it gives you the warmth of 1 layer of tights while staying waterproof.
This is the weak spot. ¥33,000 is 2 times the price of #1, and these are overpants, sized to go over regular pants.
Millet Typhon Warm Pants
Lowest price on Rakuten: ¥33,000 (as of 10/20). Prices change daily. For clothing, check the maker's size chart (height, chest, waist) against your own measurements. If unsure, check the shop's return and exchange terms.

#4 Millet Monte Rosa Pants
A winter staple built for easy leg lifts, with stretchy double-weave nylon and a crotch gusset. It is heavy at 590 g, but at ¥30.8 per gram it is the cheapest of the 5.
This is the weak spot. It is 188 g heavier than #1 and costs ¥1,650 more. It suits people who like a slimmer cut or walk mountains with lots of rock steps.
Millet Monte Rosa Pants (men's)
Lowest price on Rakuten: ¥9,075 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by shop, up to ¥12,496, and change daily. For clothing, check the maker's size chart (height, chest, waist) against your own measurements. If unsure, check the shop's return and exchange terms.

The previous model of #3, with the same waterproof rating and price. The only difference is weight: 484 − 348 means it is 136 g heavier. If a shop still has stock at a lower price, it is a pair you can choose.
Millet Typhon Warm Next Stretch Pants
Lowest price on Rakuten: ¥19,800 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by shop, up to ¥29,793, and change daily. For clothing, check the maker's size chart (height, chest, waist) against your own measurements. If unsure, check the shop's return and exchange terms.

A 470 g, ¥61,336 hardshell made for wind and snow in winter mountains. It is 245 g heavier and ¥41,536 more than the Flowwrap. Its stretch is 127%, below the Flowwrap's 220%. For day trips on low mountains you don't need this much. If you go into deep winter or snowy mountains, choose your gear by the maker's cautions.
Why does a brushed lining feel warm?
Warmth depends on how much still air gathers around your body. A brushed fabric holds air between its fibers and builds a warm layer between your leg and the cloth.
A cold fabric that clings to your leg can't build that layer. Pants that chill you at rest stops usually differ right here.
Which pants under ¥20,000 can a beginner buy?
Three of the 5 pairs cost ¥20,000 or less: the Semnoz Ripstop (¥16,500), the Monte Rosa (¥18,150) and the Flowwrap (¥19,800). If you're starting winter hiking and shop on value, look first at the Semnoz: ¥41.0 per gram, and it has the fleece lining.
Who is it for?
If you walk low mountains from November to March on clear days, start with #1, the Semnoz Ripstop Pants. If weight comes first, take #2; if you pull a pair on over others in rain and snow, take #3.
For underwear to match, choose from the hiking base layer rankings. For a rainy-day jacket, see the rain jacket rankings.
